This one isn't about being subtle. Based on the Green Russian version of the classic 4-Transistor fuzz circuit we all know and love, the Tarkin is tuned for the bass guitar and thick guitar sounds. Do not buy this pedal if you want something "nice" as this is not the pedal for you. Look at the Darklighter instead!
Crank the In knob for more bite and top-end presence, and push the Mid Shift switch to cut through a live mix. Roll back the volume knob on the guitar and you may find yourself surprised at the level of clean-up you can achieve.
The Tone knob takes you from deep rumbling wool through to nasty ice-pick fizz. Bass players will likely not venture past the 2 o'clock point without physical abuse from bandmates, but it's there if you need it. The Mid Shift switch and Tone knob are highly interactive and experimentation is highly encouraged.
